Feed Your Soul: How to Satisfy Your Hunger for More in Your Faith

At church this Sunday, I preached about the story of Nicodemus found in John 3. I closely identify with Nicodemus in this story as he is equal parts intrigued and skeptical.

To make matters more interesting, Jesus tells Nicodemus that the only answer to his intrigue is to be born again. Now, if you are a regular church-going person in the 21st century, the lingo is familiar. But if you are an old Jewish Pharisee alive during the time of Roman Occupancy in Jerusalem, this sounds ridiculous.

To my enjoyment, Nicodemus replies with a "Huh?" You can’t beat that! Nicodemus asks the question, “How can you be born again? Surely, I couldn’t climb back into my mother’s womb and be born again, could I?” Jesus' answer in short is, “It’s not about climbing into a womb. It’s about dying. If you surrender your life, I will resurrect you into a new life.

Phew! That saves an awkward call to mom.

Maybe you feel the same as Nicodemus… Maybe your faith is stale. Maybe you find yourself getting stagnant. Perhaps you’re just exhausted or dissatisfied. You’re in the perfect place. What do you have to lose? Give it up. Die. Die to yourself, surrender your life, and watch Jesus resurrect a new life. This new life is actually the life He always designed for you! I mean, you always knew there had to be more to life, right? Of course you did, that’s why you have been dissatisfied, frustrated, and stagnant.

Here’s the thing: maybe you are already walking with the Lord, but you are feeling the same way! At certain points in our walk with God, we leave behind what God intended. We exchange self-sacrifice for self-service; we trade the miraculous for practicality, and we throw away child-like faith so we can become “mature” believers.

Fam, it’s time to leave our dignity at the altar of God’s grace. Stop lying to yourself. You’re hungry for more. The season we are in right now reminds me of Revelation 3:15-22. God is knocking on the door of your heart. He is knocking on the door of our church. Jesus is knocking on the door of the western church. Will we open the door and invite Him in? Will we wait on His Spirit and let Him rearrange our way of doing things? I hope so!

Take time this week and listen to We Are Hungry - Such a great song! Let this be the cry of our hearts!
