Need More Sackbut

These are the notes for Pastor Brian’s Sunday morning message. Today we are kicking off a new series called practicing the way.

5 That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up: Daniel 3:5

Growing up - I found every crazy word an passage of scripture I could find.

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O Lord: teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

Psalm 119:9-16

This verse communicates a tremendous value to be placed on God’s word. However, what I read in scripture and experienced with people were worlds apart.

We have a gift of a couple thousand years worth of words, stories, and treasure hidden in the 66 books of the Bible revealing God’s nature.

The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He pleases. Proverbs 21:1

You and I can live a confident walk with God, knowing we hear His voice and that we are fully equipped and empowered as His servants and friends.

All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

The treasure of God is dug up through teaching, rebuke, correction, and training in right thinking.

But we have this treasure in earthen containers, so that the extraordinary greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; 2 Corinthians 4:7

For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

We need God’s word to rightly divide us.
